saxophone for cheap?

does anyone know where i can get a cheap alto saxophone, and not on ebay. I need to learn saxophone over the summer so i can start jazz band in the fall.

You can buy a cheap one, on ebay or on any instrument retail site, but it will probably be lacking in quality. If you are going to be in the jazz band, and if you are serious about your playing, you might want more quality than a cheaper instrument can offer.

As a saxophonist and saxophone instructor, I recommend that you get a brand-name saxophone. I recommend Yamaha instruments. I would say get a Yamaha student horn, or an intermediate or professional model if you have extra money to spare. But a student model will be fine, in fact, far better than any cheap imitation saxophone which claims to be of professional grade. I also have experience with Selmer (Paris), and I like them, but they are a bit heavier than Yamaha, which is why I like Yamaha. Other popular brands are Yanagisawa and Keilwerth.

Do you currently play the saxophone, or another woodwind instrument like clarinet or flute? If you are new to the sax, it might be in your best interest to get some help from a saxophone instructor over the summer. It would not hurt to get advice from a couple of teachers about which horn to get, and have them point you in the right direction as to where to shop, and how much to expect to pay.

A teacher can also test out your instrument for you, before commit to buy it, to make sure it is in good working condition.
