Why was the saxophone solo in 'Baker street' by Gerry Rafferty so famous?
I might be way off here, but I don't think it's a famous solo - most people (including myself) can't tell you who played the solo, it is never quoted by other sax players in their solos, and the tune itself has been off the airwaves for decades.
Baker Street was a great song, and very popular when it was new, but I don't think it broke any musical ground. It was just a nice song.
As for being the first sax solo on a pop record, sorry, no. Plenty of other tunes before that featured sax. For example, Boots Randolph had a big hit in the 50s with Yakety Sax. As corny as that tune is, people still play it, probably far more often than Baker Street, which I think is a much better tune.
