Learning the saxophone?
I already play guitar, im great at it and im familiar with the music theory and the whole shabbang, but im thinking about picking up the tenor or the barritone sax (without losing the guitar).
The only thing that stands between me and the sax as an instrument is the technique and the breathing.
I want to learn the tenor or the baritone coz they're big. I like the size i think its sexy.
Shoud I do it? how hard is it to learn the sax? will it distract me from the gutiar?
money isnt an issue, and im probably going for a second hand tenor first.
any advice is great! thanks!
I too have picked up sax recently. It's really pretty easy. Just a couple of things to keep in mind. Tenor sax is a Bb instrument (when you sound a C, it's actually a concert Bb), so you're going to be doing a lot of transposing. Not a big deal, just something to be aware of when you're reading sheet music. Also, be aware that it's not really possible to play a sax quietly, so make sure that you have someplace you can practice. I wouldn't worry about it detracting from your guitar playing - it'll be a while before your lips gain the strength to be able to practice for long periods of time.
As for picking up a second hand tenor, it really helps if you have someone around who can evaluate the instrument for you. Saxophones are a bit trickier than guitars when it comes to maintenance. Watch for valves that don't seal properly (this is hard to spot unless you know what you are doing), and also valves that don't open properly (stick). Finally, make sure that you get the proper gear for cleaning the instrument out.
Hope this helps.
