What is a good quality, less expensive, blue or black lacquer alto sax?
I'm looking for a good alto sax, but all of the higher quality saxophones are $3,000+. i currently have a beginner Conn Alto Sax, but i need to go up to intermediate or even pro. I find a lot of colored saxophones that look really good but i see a lot of bad reviews. I can't spend over $1,000 so if anyone has any good suggestions I would live to hear them.
There is a reason those saxophones have bad reviews- they are garbage. They charge you a lot because they think the colored lacquer will make it look attractive while in reality it has terrible construction and terrible materials.
You're not going to get out of the student range with $1000. If you want an intermediate saxophone you're going to need to spend around $2000. For professionals, you'll need to spend even more.
A good choice for you would be the Yamaha YAS 475. It is considered intermediate and is $1800. If you want a professional, a Yamaha 62II is about $2100. Keilwerth's EX90 alto is also in the $2100 range, but is considered intermediate, but is still a good sax. A Selmer La Voix SAS280 also might be a good option, it is $1900 and comes in black lacquer if you really want it. The Yanagisawa A-901 is the most expensive intermediate at $2500, but is another high quality saxophone from a reliable make.
In conclusion, buy one of these or don't buy at all. You're not going to get a good saxophone for under $1000. If you have to wait a year to be able to spend $2000 on one, I'd recommend doing that instead of wasting it on a bad saxophone.
