Good brands for mellophones?
I've been playing brass for about 3 years now - I picked it up to play it for marching band in the hopes of making a drum corps someday. Now I'm graduating high school, and since I'm mainly a saxophone player, all the brass instruments I[ve played on have been school-owned. I will need to buy my own mellophone to keep practicing for fall drum corps audition. I've been looking on eBay for mells at reasonable prices, but being a saxophone player, I don't know what brands are good for brass. Could you help me out and tell me which are good, which are not?
E.F. Durand
Accord
JinYin
Bach
Dynasty
Blessing
Yamaha
King
if you really want to perform well at the audition you should look at which corps your auditioning for and find out what brand they play on. the big three are Dynasty, King, and Yamaha. if you go with any of those you will be ok.
as a woodwind player there are a few things that will help you in getting a spot on a top 12 hornline.
1. Work on your marching technique and get it down pat. This is like toe height and posture and making your direction changes very very crisp and sharp. Each group has their different styles that set them apart and they will teach you all those at auditions/camps.
2. Come in with a very hard working attitude. if they are teaching drill and ask you to run back to do it over again...do it. They are going to be trying to distinguish what sets a very few people apart from others and work ethic is huge in that realm.
3. Listen. You are going to have a shit load of information thrown at you in a very very short amount of time and you need to be able to process it and do what they ask. Just listen to what they are saying and do your best to make it happen.
you probably shouldn't buy a mellophone just rent one from a local music store or your high school. just explain to the your h.s. band director that you want to audition and he/she will probably help you out.
