Why are the woodwinds a less unified instrument family than the brass instruments?
This is what i have so far:
Woodwinds are not necessarily made of wood anymore and they employ several different methods of setting up vibration: blowing across a mouth hole (flute family), blowing into a mouthpiece that has a single reed (clarinet and saxophone family families), or blowing into a mouth piece fitted with a double reed (oboe and bassoon families)
Ok, the lack of unification of the woodwinds has to do with what the family is based on...wood. So a very broad Definition was given to woodwinds... that the instrument was wood and that covers too much ground. On the other hand, the brass family is defined not by the material of the instrument but how the sound is produced... there are wooden brass instruments like the coronette and the Alphorn but the "buzzzzz" is what puts them in the brass family.
