One Night Only - Rod Stewart Live at Royal Albert Hall

For a long time we just had our puppets sing various songs for the children in our Junior Church program, but then we built a large permanent stage and decided to expand our experience by adding a puppet band. We gave the band a name and it included drums, keyboard, guitar, trumpets, and a saxophone.
We bought a child-sized drum set at a local toy store and built a shelf for it on our puppet theater. To allow the puppet to sing and use both hands for playing, two puppeteers were required. We used yarn that closely matched the puppet's skin color to fasten the sticks to his hands. With a bit of work, they were positioned so a puppeteer could play in a convincing manner. The key is to set the sticks so the person working the hands can drum without raising their own hands over the theater.
To work the puppet, one person takes the head and focuses on maintaining proper height and keeping the puppet's mouth closed unless it is singing. The other person works the hands and actually drums along with the song. It will take a bit of practice and work to determine the best positions for the puppeteers, but it is well worth it.
For the piano player, I took a coat hanger and molded it into a "Y" shape and fastened the puppet's hands on the top so they were spread 6-8 inches apart. It took a while, but once the hands were set, it was a simple matter of lifting and moving the rod to make the puppet play the piano. That way, one puppeteer could work the piano player.
Setting up the guitar player was fairly simple as well. We placed the guitar on him, used yarn to fasten his hand on the neck and then positioned the wrist band on the other hand in a way that allowed the puppeteer to use it to strum the strings.
The trumpets and saxophones were fastened to the puppets using yarn that closely matched their skin color. We set them up so the puppeteer could raise and lower them from the puppet's mouth depending on if they were playing or resting.
From there it was a simple matter to choose the song, practice it many times, and perform it. The band was well received and became a regular part of our Sunday morning program.
A puppet band is fun to watch and adds excitement to your program. If you aren't using one now, it's a great thing to consider.
