Is the Selmer AS500 a pro sax?
I want to buy Selmer AS500, but i dont know whether its a professional saxophone or not.
Please answer ASAP!
The short answer is 'No, the AS500 is a student model.' You probably want the loooooooooong answer though.
The Selmer AS500 is a Selmer USA model. Most of the Selmer USA saxes are student level or intermediate. I don't think they are making any pro models at all at the moment. They did make a fantastic pro model in the 1980's, but they didn't put the model number on most of them. These are the ones that have serial numbers between 820,000 and 840,000. The bell will be heavily engraved, the needle springs will be made of blued steel needles that come to a sharp point and the pad resonators, if original to the horn, will be white metal domes. This would be true of the 1980's Selmer Omega, the AS162, the AS100 and the AS110.... all pretty much the same great horn. The current Selmer Omega is marked as such along with a model number beginning with 'MG' but this is NOT a pro model.
Intermediate horns of the same era will have bell engraving, but will have blunt white metal springs, and brown resonators on the pads, if the pads are original to the horn.
I have acquired a number of pro saxes over the years for astonishing (at times) prices. I bought a wonder Selmer AS162 once for a mere $150. Didn't look too great, but these horns were designed in a joint project between Selmer USA and Selmer Paris. They borrowed heavily from the Mark 6 design, and the horn looks a lot like a Mark 6 with an eerily similar but not identical sound. Hard to beat this model for the price. The most I ever paid for one was $600 and it was dead mint. Great alternative to the very pricey Selmer Paris horns for the budget minded.
My current personal pro horn is a Selmer Paris Series II, but that's because my Selmer USA AS162 is in the shop for some tweaking to make it play at it's best. I only paid $300 for this horn, and my Series II cost me almost $2000. There are a lot of other wonderful models as well made by other companies such as Dolnet, SML, certain Martin and Buescher models, Beaugnier, and of course, Buffet Crampon. Currently restoring a minty silver-plated Dolnet. Sweet jazz horn!
Best of luck in your search.
