Should I polish my horn???

I have an old Martin Handcraft Alto saxophone from around 1925 that is pretty tarnished up. There are no dents or anything, just the finish is dark and tarnished. I was wondering if it would hurt the value of it if I tried something like Tarn-X or a similar cleaner? I really don't know anything about saxophones, but from what I've read, it should be worth a little something and I don't want to do anything that would decrease the value of it, so .......Should I polish my horn????

Old Martins typically have lacquer missing in some areas. Are you talking about polishing bare brass where the lacquer is missing? If so, you'll wind up with a horn that has bright, shiny areas (polished bare brass) and darker areas where the lacquer remains. Over a period of many months the bare brass will darken and the appearance will be more uniform. If you're talking about polishing the lacquered surfaces, DONT! The lacquer darkens with age and this is considered desirable to a future buyer. Polishes will eventually remove the lacquer, and you will have de-valued a desirable horn by probably 50%. I'd leave it alone. What counts is what it plays like, not what it looks like.
