How do do you produce a better tone on an Alto Saxophone?
I currently have a Yamaha 475 and a Meyer mouthpiece (I forgot what sized chamber) and I use Vandoren Java 2 1/2. For some reason, even when I open my throat and loosen my jaw, I still don't produce a clear, rich, and jazzy tone. If someone could help me out, I would much appreciated it.
Javas aren't really made for "clear, rich" tone...they're more of a bright, punchy reed good for soloing, particularly in bebop and more "in your face" styles. My preferred reed for jazz is the Rico Plasticover reed. (I know, shame on me for recommending a Rico reed, but trust me these are the best Ricos I've ever played.) These reeds are a hybrid between cane and plastic: They're cane covered with a layer of plastic. This allows the reed to retain the fullness of a cane reed while giving more of a swaggy jazzy tone. They're also good for doubling, since you don't have to keep them wet. I pair a strength 4 reed with a very open-chamber mouthpiece for jazz, but if yours is a medium chamber (my guess) you probably want to stay around 2.5-3.
If you want to stick with a pure cane reed, I'd recommend using the Vandoren ZZ reed. These tend to have a richer tone than Javas, good for ensemble playing, as well as older jazz styles and cool jazz. However, they may or may not give you the punch you need for some charts.
If you want to go the other way and get a solid plastic reed, I'd recommend a Legere Studio Cut. These are pretty expensive ($16 apiece!) but they last MUCH longer than cane reeds so it's really a comparable price.
Note that higher strength reeds will automatically give you a good tone, so try to work your way up to at least 3 or 3.5 if you want to stay with Java reeds.
