How do I make a cheap recording studio?
I'm 14 and play the saxophone and piano, and was interested in recording some stuff me and my friends play. I am getting an Apple iMac in the next few weeks, and know it comes with Garageband. I know my way around it pretty well, and I have an
M-Audio MIDI keyboard with the M-Audio Micro Audio Interface. I have been playing around with these on the included Session software, and even though it's great, I'm getting kind of bored with just one piano and one microphone. What would I need to make a basic, Mac-based recording studio for a few instruments and one or two vocals?
Greetings,
This is a difficult question to answer without knowing what you are able to budget.
Since you are using a Mac, I might consider using Logic as your recording software and getting a Firewire Mixer. There are some very affordable 8 & 16 ch firewire mixers made by Alesis and Mackie. The mic pre's in them are OK at best. Some SM57's and something like the AT4050 or an Old CAD E-100 or even a Rode Nt1000 would make for a good condenser microphone.
You can finish it all off with some Sony 7605's which are very standard studio headphones. You'll need cables, mic stands, pop filters, etc to finish it all up.
You could probably do this for about $2000 which may seem expensive but you could easily spend 100X that much and not have much to show for it.
Repost with your budget and it would be much easier to point you in the right direction.
Good Luck,
