How does a saxophone reed produce the sound of Sweep the dog's squeaking voice from Sooty?

I am mainly directing this question towards SAXOPHONISTS but anyone who knows about sax reeds will be appreciated.
All that is said online is that Sweep's voice was originally made by 'using a saxophone reed', but I am wondering exactly how?
Isn't the reed just a wooden piece that needs to be attached to the saxophone mouthpiece - and the saxophone, to produce any sound?
I know a KAZOO is meant to produce a similar sound but it just doesn't have the same sort of tone.
Also, there is a behind the scenes clip on YOUTUBE of Sooty and Co where we see a brief (but low quality) glimpse of Sweep's 90s puppeteer with something in his mouth that suggests that the modern Sweep uses an altered and specially made instrument of some kind rather than 'just' a sax reed, (from 1:15):

The reed is used much in the way that a Punch-and-Judy man would make funny voices. The reed is fully inside the mouth and by blowing it with tongue pressed hard, it squeaks.

In modern times, they just made a gadget that did all the hard work for the puppeteer.
