What french horn should I buy?
I'm buying my french horn. I used the school instrument for seventh grade to see if I like it, and I do, so I'm planning to buy one. I played a cornet in sixth grade and moved to french horn. But i'm not sure what french horn to get.
I need a french horn that will last me through high school and eighth grade (5 years). I'm also on a tight budget so for a new french horn I don't want to pay more than 2,000 dollars, and for a used no more than 1,500 dollars. I also want a double french horn, because I'm used to the fingerings.
I was looking at this page http://www.wwbw.com/Double-Horns-French-Horns1.wwbw?o=1 and I was wondering if any of those could last me through highschool. If not, would you recommend one that fits everything I listed above?
If you want more info, I posted this on a forum and I usually update. http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?141229-Buying-first-french-horn-I-ve-only-been-playing-for-a-year
thankyouu!
Conn and Holton are the top two brands for horns, and Yamaha has a following as well. Unfortunately, your budget limits your options. If you can stretch your price range a bit more, look into a Conn 6D or Holton H378/H379 (better still if you can find one used). If you haven't yet, try looking on eBay for deals. In fact, a quick search just turned up a 30-year-old Holton H179 for just under $1500.
The best way to find the right instrument is by playing different horns. If there is a music store in your area, start there. If not, Woodwind & Brasswind has a deal where they'll send you an instrument for a trial period, where you can play it for X days, then either purchase or return it.
