Can you recommend a good beginner's alto saxophone?
I'm looking into taking up the sax (probably alto) and wanted to see if anyone could advise on which models would be a good first instrument. Any other pointers on starting to learn (e.g. exercises to do, styles to try) would be fantastic as well!
Thanks
S
Brands of saxes for beginners are usually narrowed down to Selmer or Yamaha... they are quality instruments for a decent price. They are also pretty durable and can take a bit of punishment. Jupiter is also another well known student brand, and lately have been increasing in quality and innovation. Sub-brands like Bundy (made by Selmer) are also alright, but if in doubt, stick to the 3 name brands listed above.
As far as models go there's really not much difference, with the exception of ornamentaions like key shape, inlay, key guards.
Do look for one with pinky finger rollers (though I think they all have them) and most now have a high F# key, which will be useful to you in a couple years, but not necessary.
As for books and study methods, I recommend either Rubank Elementary Method Book I, or Essential Elements for Alto Sax (which also comes with a CD). Both clearly show you the basics and give you exercises in tonguing, notes, tone, music theory, and terminology. Also, it may be far beyond your ability, but pick up Foundation Studies for Saxophone by David Hite- you can still play out of it as a beginner, but will last and be applicable until you are a pro!
Also, if you aren't going to be part of a school band program, try to get a private teacher, even if only for a couple lessons. They will help assure that you have a good foundation from which to build your skills, and make sure you don't start teaching yourself bad habits or techniques. Most teachers are pretty affordable, and many have special deals like "first lesson free". Just check your local phone book or even Craigslist.
As for styles... haha... try whatever appeals to you, and whatever DOESN'T! Books and teachers can only make you so good... experience is where you'll do most of your learning. Don't like ska? Play it- you'll have fun and learn something. Never heard of World Beat? Play it- you'll have fun and learn something. Really dig salsa or 80's hair bands? Play it- you'll have fun and learn something!
Being a sax player means immitation and innovation. As you get better as a musician, start trying to play along with your favorite songs, start trying to play solos by ear and writing them down (called transcribing)... steal techniques and sounds from players you admire, and figure out how to make them your own.
Anyways, I wish you luck and lots of fun!
