What is the best way to learn the saxophone?
I've just bought a saxophone and I have managed to get a few tunes out of it but I'm an absolute beginner. Is there a recommended method or DVD or anything which is really good. Or would it just be best to go to a sax teacher? I just thought I'd add that I don't like Jazz, so please don't recommend any Jazz teachers or books etc. cheers.
Well, it depends upon how much sound you get out of it versus how much noise.
There is much more to playing sax than the proper fingering of the keys. You must hold your mouth and tongue just right, and be able to use both to help shape the sound and punctuate the beat.
If you can do this part fine, you should be okay with self-teaching. If you have any trouble with the mouth, or with reaching the keys and other mechanics, it is best to at least start out with a teacher. You can always use a teacher to get the basics and then go to self-teaching to fill in your personal style and sound.
