The Saxophone
The saxophone was conceived in 1846 by Adolphe Sax, who desired to create a strong augmentation to the woodwind instrument dynasty. It is quite similar to the clarinet in that it can be operated with a singular reed mouthpiece, which is what produces the intonation which illustrates why it's certainly not in the brass family.
Mr. Sax was born in Belgium where he grew up to be an instrument manufacturer in his dad's shop as well as an accomplished musician. He did extensive work on the clarinet, still his passion was cramming a void in between the woodwind and brass families which would be both powerful and adaptive and the sax took care of both.
The instrument is cone shaped with two principal elements; the neck and also the body. The body comprises of three different components starting with the main assembly, which starts at the top and ends where it begins to curve, the keys are situated on the main body. The U-shaped tube at the base is the bow and the large flared piece at the end is called the bell.

World renowned performer Bob Hope (1903-2003) regularly played the sax as well as actress Jennifer Garner from the motion picture Valentines Day. The story goes that the religious community thought of the deep timbres as unduly sexy and the Vatican literally outlawed it all together.
You can purchase a good beginner sax for only a few hundred dollars from several different renowned instrument makers, search for one that includes a case and some tutorial literature alongside a chromatic tuner. For the more serious saxophonist you can expect to pay well into the thousands.
While many instruments have their own particular story none could be more worthy of interest as this horn's rich antiquity, that will prove to be filled with everything we love including; charm, betrayal, conspiracy, rebellion and war. It seems the saxophone has at no time dropped it's bad boy stigma and even to this day can generate a passionate conversation.
