Anybody knowledgeable about saxophones?
Hi, I'm playing a Jupiter/Carnegie CAS-860 alto saxophone with a C* mouthpiece and #3 Hemke reeds. Lately, I've been having trouble with squeaking. It happens frequently on any notes above high D to altissimo, and also sometimes when I sustain pitches. I've always had a strong embouchure, so I'm thinking that maybe when I'm holding a note, I'm closing off the opening to the mouthpiece. Is that likely? Could my reeds be the wrong strength? I have never had this problem before; previously, I was able to hit the high notes consistently and with good tone and generally play better. I don't think my pads are leaking, b/c I shone a light down with the keys closed, and no light showed through. Then again, I'm not the biggest repair pro. Any ideas out there? I hate to take it in to the repair shop because I have music contest in a few days, so unless the fix is really quick (assuming there IS something mechanically wrong), that's not an option. I appreciate any input!!! : )
As a clarinetist, I can offer some limited help, squeaks often are the result of reed problems:
1. Make sure that you are not biting. Pressure with the lip muscles, not teeth. This is a major cause of squeaking.
2. Make sure that your reeds are not warped. Warped reeds always squeak, esp. in the high registers. To test for warpage, place your reed on a flat piece of glass (like a glass table top) and see if it lies absolutely flat. If it wiggles even a little, it is warped. You might try going up a 1/2 size or so, reed strength can contribute.
3. Fixing warped reeds: if only mildly, get some 400 or 600 grade sandpaper and smooth the backs of the reeds. If it's warped badly, throw it away!!
4. I squeak most often on high sustained pitches if I move anything, even a little bit, in the embouchure. Do you stand or sit when performing? People tend to move more while standing, so you might try sitting perfectly still a few times. This shouldn't effect your musical expression; that comes only through your playing, not through body movement.
5. When you wet your reed, wet it all the way down the back, not just the thinner top 1/2. Put the whole thing in your mouth before placing on the sax!!
Best of luck.
