Does anyone have a suggestion for what size reed to use with a Claude Lakey 6*3 alto saxophone mouthpiece?
I've recenty recieved a Claude Lakey 6*3 alto saxophone mouthpiece and when I use a Hempke 3 or a Van Doren 3 reed, I get too much "honk" from my horn. Any suggestions on different brands or sizes of reeds to use? Or, is it really my embrochure?
It could be a number of things. First, the mouthpiece may have a different facing that you are used to, and so you will need to get used to it, and adjust your air stream after playing for a while.
If you're getting a "honky" sound, you may want to try a harder reed, or a softer reed. It depends on how it feels to you. If it is really easy to blow, and you're out of tune, your reed might be too soft. If it is difficult to blow and your tone is airy, then the reed might be too hard.
This is a jazz mouthpiece. If you're used to playing on a classical mouthpiece, you will need to adjust your embouchure a bit. You have to loosen up. It takes time to get used to a new mouthpiece, and you may need to buy a different type of reed to match the mouthpiece. You might try Vandoren Java and see if they work.
