Were saxophones made better back in the day compared to today?
My uncle has a tenor sax he isn't using and hasn't used for a very long time now... would it be better borrowing his than buying one... of course I'd have to pay for the needed repairs such as possibly pad replacement etc.
There are a few saxophones from the older days that many professionals use today. The most popular is definitely the Selmer Mark VI (about the 70s). This model, some other Selmers, and some other different brands are great instruments that are a few decades old. My guess is your uncle probably doesn't have a Mark VI (although he could, some models are worth thousands), or any of these instruments, but it still may be half decent.
I'd give your uncle's saxophone a shot. Re-padding and other repairs should cost a little, but certainly less than buying a new or used one. Saxophones haven't changed too much over the years, so you should be fine in that respect. If you find out it's not that great, you can also get a new one if you decide to stick with it.
