Beginner Saxophone Player In Band, Advice?
ok, well I just started 5th grade not too long ago and joined band, in our band we currently have 1 alto saxophone player (me), 2 flutes, 2 trombones, 1 tuba, and 13 trumpets....yea. We can't choose percussion in the beginning, or band leader will choose people to be percussionists in january. but anyway i heard a rumor that the band teacher is making 4 people baritone and 4 percussionists, all from the trumpets. The 7th grade saxophone player told me Sax's get alot of solos so im going to need to be good at it. i just want some advice on keeping a good pitch and some good tips for playing and taking care of my instrument and what case is the best. i have a reed hardness of 3, a pad saver (big fluffy thingy you use to clean your sax) metronome, incentive barometer, and basically that's it. do i need anything else?
And yes, i know 11 year olds arnt supposed to be on yahoo answers...so dont talk to me about it.
At this point your band director should be teaching you the basics of playing your instrument. Embouchure (lip formation) and breath support are probably the primary physical things you need to focus on in your beginning stages. Make sure your embouchure is firm but avoid biting (upward pressure from the bottom jaw). Also work on taking a deep breath and setting the abdominal muscles to push the air out in a steady, fast and concentrated stream.
Make sure your neck strap is adjusted up enough to take most of the weight of the instrument so your hands and fingers can be relaxed to operate the keys.
I question starting on a strength 3 reed, but perhaps that is what works best with your mouthpiece. The mouthpiece/reed combination is probably the most critical aspect of getting a good sound. The mouthpiece and reed must be matched in regards to tip opening and hardness of the reed. A reed that is too hard will make you have to blow hard or bite down in order to get the reed to vibrate against the mouthpiece tip. One that is too soft will either close up against the tip not allowing any air to go through (thus no vibration) or cause you to relax your lips to the point of getting an airy, unfocused tone. A properly matched mouthpiece/reed will allow you to play at all dynamic levels (soft to loud) with a firm embouchure and fast air stream without biting. And remember, playing softly depends on a fast, supported air flow.
The above things will also affect the good pitch you are concerned about. The best other thing to help your pitch is your ears. Always, use your ears to listen to your tone and pitch while playing. If your band director cannot demonstrate a good sax tone then find good recordings of classical style sax players in order to get a good mental concept of saxophone sound (Harvey Pittel, Fred Hemke, Donald Sinta, Marcel Mule, Sigurd Rascher, Claude Delangle to name a few good models).
The case your sax came in should be fine, and if you have cork grease and key oil then you should be good to go.
Best of luck and email me if I can answer any other sax questions.
