Clarinet Mouthpieces that work for both classical and jazz?
Hi I'm a music student who is looking for a new clarinet mouthpiece that easily works for both classical and jazz styles. My Vandoreen B45 recently chipped and I'm looking for a new piece that can easily work for the two styles as I'm planning on going into music performance that deals with pit orchestra and recording sessions rather than orchestra repertoire.
Clarinet is one of my secondary instruments and I'm looking for something easy to play, with not much need to warm up the instrument between switching from flute, piccolo, or one of the saxophones.
I really hope there's someone out there who can help me out! Thanks much!!
Good old mouthpieces.... Best you can do I must say is find a mouthpiece that is inbetween. By that i mean a mouthpiece with a tip opening not to small nor to big as classical clarinet would go for a smaller tip opening and jazz would require a larger tip opening. Same goes for the reed strength. Softer for jazz and harder for Classical. I Couldn't say that you would get the very best mouthpiece for both. Also being as jazz really is a different kind of clarinet playing on its own, it would be hard to say whether it would be the best combination for you to be playing.
Summing it up though, find a mouthpiece which has a bit of both. I believe you can find a good jazz mouthpiece for cheap though. It might be easier to just have two mouthpieces.
Usually jazz players go the completely opposite dirrection in their set up so it could be difficult.
Hope this helps. Unfortunately i only do classical clarinet so i couldn't say for sure.
