Any tips on transitioning from a plastic mouthpiece to metal for a saxophone?
I started playing the tenor saxophone two years ago and have never used a metal mouthpiece until yesterday.
When I did, something happened (I'm guessing I screwed up my embouchure) and I can no longer even play my old mouthpiece.
We have jazz gig in a week and I need to be able to play the sax.
Currently, I can get the notes out- occasionally if not rarely- and when I do, I have to use up all of my available oxygen in my lungs, I am playing too loud and it is in spurts.
Help?
I think will is right. If your metal mouthpiece is significantly different width wise (usually are) then you might need to just build your embouchure around it. I don't know why you can't play on your rubber any more... I've never heard of that. Your metal mouthpiece might just be a bad one. In the future though you usually want to give yourself plenty of time to adjust to a mouthpiece before going into a performance.
Good luck.
