Contemporary Genre Fusions: African Tribal Dance Music
Over the past 20-30 years, it seems that we’ve evoloved from one music style dominating each new decade to gradually hearing much more variety in popular music. The 60’s and 70’s were mainly rock, the 80’s were mainly pop, and the 90’s were more of a blend of different funky beats.
The 90’s combined pop and rock with techno and R’n’B and, during the first 10 years of this bright new millennium, we’ve even heard these and other mainstream styles mix with tribal dance music. Rhythms and sounds that we’ve historically left to the ‘new age’ crowd are now making more obvious inroads into popular music by blending with beats that we’re more familiar with – and doing so rather successfully!
Why shouldn’t tribal dance music become more popular now that it’s more easily available to a greater audience?
As part of its very nature, tribal drum music has an instinctive beat. Ceremonially used as a way of expressing emotion, African tribal drum music embodies a heartbeat that brings up a certain frame of mind in the dancers. In the same way as it spoke to tribal people dancing on the African savannah centuries ago, the emotion of tribal dance music goes beyond race, culture and religion, and persuades us to dance.
Side effect of the slave trade
Tribal dance music has played an important part in the evolution of many European and Western music genres. This shouldn’t come as a surprise when we consider that the slave trade brought together hundreds of different styles of tribal dance music that quickly began to exert their influence on European music styles. From rock’n’roll and jazz to techno and dance, tribal drum music became an integral part of the progression of modern music styles
The Twist & the Jitterbug
Tribal beats joined with popular music to produce dances such as The Jitterbug and The Twist, which travelled from our ears directlydown to our feet without bothering to ask for permission—the only way you can stand still when they take hold of your spinal column is by nailing your feet to the floor. Even more stolid folks thought that was too painful, so they threw away the hammer and boogied into miniskirts and blue-suede shoes.
Contemporary tribal trance dance music
After its journey through the 20th century, tribal dance music is no longer just a background sound in the modern music world. Recording artists such as Ariel Kalma, Professor Trance and Adesa have helped to keep tribal music alive and well in modern culture. These artists, among many others, have gathered tribal dance music with rhythms reminiscent of rock, R&B and pop from far-flung places such as Australia, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Africa, North America and Central Europe. To create the brilliant sound full of energy and movement, they blend didgeridoos, African singing and Tibetan chants blend with guitar riffs and smooth saxophone notes.
Music is a living thing and we can only hope that, as it continues to change grow, people and nations will evolve in kind.
The Path Before Us
The first decade of this new millennium has been rife with triumph, but also with tragedy. As people all around the world rejoice and grieve together, as we become more accepting of diverse beliefs and ways of life, hopefully we will follow in the direction that music leads – a harmonisation of mankind’s numerous voices into one melodic sound. The tribal music that once played such an important role of our history is now guiding us into a peaceful future.
