Different blowing techniques on the Alto Saxophone?
Had my first saxophone lesson today, and I can blow it normally just fine, but when my teacher asked me to blow it and roll my tongue as if i'm saying 'tuuuuu', I just can't do it! I just end up blowing loads of saliva into it and the vibrations hurt my tongue.
I have my next lesson in a few days and still can't manage to get it right, Has anybody else had this problem and how did you manage to get past it?

If so, that's a rather advanced technique and not something you'd likely do in your first lesson. I'm guessing your teacher just wants you to use your tongue to play the note instead of just blowing, since this is very important to learning the instrument. All you need to do is put the mouthpiece in your mouth, put the tip of your tongue against the tip of the mouthpiece, then say something like "tu" or "ta" so that you get a nice, sharp start to your sound. If all you do is breathe into your saxophone, it's not very accurate, and it doesn't sound as clear. You don't have to "roll" your tongue in any way...just make sure you get a nice "T" at the beginning.
