Good music programs at colleges?
I'm going to finish up my Bachelor's at the end of next school year, and I can't decide where to get my Master's.
My major is Music Performance, and I play the clarinet and the saxophone. I am currently at a laid-back, 4-year college, in a small city (20,000-ish), and I love it here.
For my next school, I want a laid-back group of people to work with, but a big city is fine. I just don't want to have to work with snooty people while I get my Master's (so Berklee, Julliard, and such are out).
So, to summarize, I want a school with a good music program, a Music Performance major option, and laid-back people in the program. Picky, I know, but if anyone has any ideas of a place that might work for me, please share.
I'll make any tuition work for me.
Frankly, any graduate school of music that is going to prepare you well, is going to have more really aggressive and driven people in it, than mellow folks. Why would you dismiss people at Berklee and Juilliard as *snooty*? You are going to find nice personalities and not-so-nice at any school. What matters is the quality of education you receive, and how pro-active you are about doing well. Is the school you are currently in a music *department*, or a separate School of Music? The more specialized - and prestigious - the school is, the more you are going to see *reality* - that musicians in ALL genres - classical, popular, etc. - are there to get all they can out of the place, not just *hang out*. If you seek city schools, then expect fewer mellow folks - people are there to get into the game. I happen to live close to Bard College Conservatory of Music. The environment here is very mellow - we are near Woodstock, in the very peaceful and scenic Hudson Valley - but the conservatory students are in a pressure cooker - big names, big concepts, big productions (not big as is sloppy musicals - big as in high-level international artists) - and a big price tag. They *need* the woods to decompress. You could study with Laura Flax - I hope you know her playing, because she is a very fine player indeed.
If you could clarify for us what you intend to DO with this MM degree, perhaps we could help you more. If you seek to replace Stanley Drucker in the next round of auditions - you need to be in a city with a KILLERS in the woodwind department. If you intend to play in a klezmer band, do private teaching, and write arrangements at home - you can find a school in the woods. Let us know - I cannot get all your signals.
