saxophones! what to buy?
whats the difference between an alto, soprano, tenor sax?? how can i know what suite me the most?
The primary difference between the saxophones is size. There is a also a difference of what key they play in (Bb for Tenor and soprano, Eb for alto). Another big difference is the amount of playing time you can get in groups (jazz bands, concert bands, etc) on each of the instruments. You'll have much more opportunity for playing if you do alto or tenor because most songs don't have soprano saxophone parts. It just isn't written for much. There are a few, especially in jazz, but we're talking less than 5% of the the music out there, and even less of that gets played. I've played in many jazz bands and read hundreds of jazz pieces, and needed my soprano for maybe 5.
What I would do is go to a music store near you and talk to the saxophone lesson teacher. Then while you are with the teacher, try out the different saxophones and see which one might come easier, and what issues the teacher sees. Then start renting first, as just like a child, you may not like playing the instrument in 6 months or a year, and take lessons so you learn to play it properly and not start all the bad habits that you will learn if you try teaching yourself.
