Are Selmer Saxophones alright for a Jazz Band?
I'm a high school senior who chugged through all my high school music on a 30-year-old student Yamaha saxophone. Now I'm looking to purchase something a little better, as I will be needing it for my local community band and potentially for University music classes.
I came to settle on the Selmer La Voix II Alto, both for the quality of the instrument and the price. But after reading reviews of the instrument, I get the impression that its tone is on the bright and metallic side. If I should end up taking Jazz classes or going into my local community jazz band, would my saxophone be adequate, or would I be better off with another model?
Note that I plan to buy the saxophone off wwbw.com, and have no chance to try before I buy.
If the Yamaha did well for you, maybe just get a better Yamaha. Japanese people are incredible craftsmen, and the instrument repairman at LSU says that Yamahas are quite easy to work on due to their construction. Many things can be adjusted on a Yamaha that may have to be replaced on a different horn. Now that may not factor in to what you want in terms of sound. Remember this: Ornette Coleman played a plastic Grafton alto saxophone. Charlie Parker played whatever saxophone was available because many times his own sax was in a pawn shop. I think dark and brightness have so much to do with your mouthpiece and reed. After that the ligature can affect tone as well. Maybe even the pads affect tone also, but take everything off of a yamaha and a selmer and you have a brass conical instrument. The famous album called Jazz at Massey Hall featuring Charlie Parker, Dizzy, Max Roach, Mingus, and Bud Powell is a live recording in Toronto, and Parker is playing a plastic Grafton saxophone. Listen to this record and listen to other Parker stuff. It still sounds like Charlie Parker. You're still going to sound like you on that Selmer or whatever. Maybe ask a sax teacher at the college or ask the repairman at the school you're going to attend. The school usually has instruments that students check out, and the repairman(woman) will know more than anyone which instruments his(her) students are enjoying, and which ones they are struggling with.
