Kids and music
Someone once said; if music is the food of life, play on. Music is the food of life. Every culture on earth has their own style of music, their own music traditions and all nationalities revel in dance and music for rituals and for celebrations or just for the pure enjoyment. And mostly it is a family or tribal affair where children play a part.
Kids and music go together like fish and water. Take any small child into a room with a piano and they will immediately scramble up onto the seat and start plunking away on the keys. And, small children love ukuleles, drums, whistles and any type of instrument they can make a noise with. The trick is to keep them involved with music as they get older.
Music has a history of playing a role in cultures and in learning. One of the first "music" forms children hear or are entertained with are nursery rhymes, probably less so today than 50 years ago. Children learn from the role models they see and hear so those children fortunate enough to be born into a musical family have a distinct advantage over their non-musical family peers. Most parents are concerned about what their young children see and hear, but as children grow older, parents pay less attention to the music and videos that hold their children's interest.
A piece of advice my wife and I were provided when we became parents was; if you want your children to stay out of trouble and be involved in school, put them into a music program – which we did. We have not regretted it. Of course the early days were a struggle as we started them all on the piano, a very worthwhile investment. By the time high-school came around, all three kids had graduated to trumpets, saxophones and of course, guitars. This early musical introduction provided them with a solid grounding in the appreciation of music and all three, now adults, are accomplished musicians, albeit amateur ones.
We went through all the music styles as the kids grew up beginning with Sesame Street and Raffi through Michael Jackson and Thriller (the kids favorite dance music) into the Kurt Cobain, Green Day and Rage against the Machine, to name just a few. For the past 30 years, some children's television has very effectively used the combination of animation / puppetry and words with music to provide a very creative learning experience for children.
Music is as important to life as food and water. It feeds the soul and the spirit of everyone who enjoys some form of music whether it be Opera, Rap, Rock, Country or Jazz and music created and played on an incredible array of musical instruments developed by the huge variety of nationalities on this planet.
If you have no music background in your family, it doesn't matter. Put your kids into a music program. Encourage them to play a musical instrument they enjoy, not one you want them to play. With the advent of I-Pods, MP3 players, the Internet and CDs, access to music today is as easy and simple as it's ever going be. Take the advice of one who knows; if you have small children or children of any age (it's never too late), get them involved in a music program. You'll never regret it, even if their choice of instruments is drums. There are many music competitions for kids available today, one being provided from the writer's company at http://www.greanwold.com. Kids just gotta karboogle!
