Transposing From Flute to Tenor saxophone?
I'm trying to Transpose a Music piece From flute (the piece has a B flat in it and thats all) to Tenor Saxophone and I don't understand how to do it. I know flute is in the Key of C and Tenor Sax is in the key of B flat. can some one help me?
Flute plays in concert pitch, so the note written is the note played. With a B-flat instrument, the written note is one whole-step higher than concert pitch. A written C would sound as a B-flat. Then with the tenor saxophone (and bass clarinet), it sounds another octave lower, so the difference is actually a major 9th (octave+whole step). A third-space C for tenor sax would be the concert B-flat one ledger line below the staff.
A piece with only a B-flat in the key signature would be the key of F Major, or possibly D minor. For the tenor sax, it would transpose to the key of G Major/E minor (one sharp, F). If the flute part doesn't go too high, all you really need to do is rewrite the entire thing up one whole step. Just remember that the sax would sound an octave lower because of the transposition.
