Which brand of Tenor Sax should I buy? Go vintage?
I'm a sophomore in college and have been missing playing my tenor sax. I always rented in high school and am now looking to buy one. I had got decently proficient at playing so I don't want to start up with a beginner sax. As I'm in college, I'm quite broke; thus, I was thinking about buying one of the new, cheap foreign made saxes off ebay, but have heard horror stories. I have seen and heard of people buying older, vintage saxes (example: conn). Also the alternative exists of buying a used newer tenor sax (example: yamaha)
So my question is, what type of sax should i buy and which is the best for it's money? Also on any of the above routes of buying a tenor, which brand would you recommend and briefly why? Also where would you recommend I shop (ebay, music store, pawn shop, etc)
Thank you much for answering; I really need your help! Jeremiah
Do not buy a cheap ebay sax. You get what you pay for with one of them. If you buy one for 10% of the cost of a good instrument, you will get about 10% of the quality of a saxophone.
As for vintage saxophones, they can be quality, but vintage saxes usually have intonation issues also. I play an old (1926) Conn Chu Berry alto, and it plays wonderfully, but I have to worry about intonation much more than I would on my Yamaha.
You are at the college level of music, which means you should be looking for professional/advanced level instruments. Yes, they are going to be more expensive, but if you are doing this as a degree and possible career, you just need to bite the bullet and get the best. The brands that most saxophonists accept as professional/advanced level manufacturers are (in no particular order):
Selmer
Yamaha
Yanigasawa
Keilwerth
Cannonball
P Mauriat (this is only about 50/50 on most saxophone forums as being a pro level maker, but still to be considered)
All of these instrument makers are going to be worth the money you spend on them. I will never recommend a certain brand, because at this level of musicianship, the player's preference of tone color, key positioning, weight, and so many other items make a recommendation worthless. After all, I could recommend what I like, but you may not like it, so what good was it? The only way to find the one you like is to play test the instruments, and find the one that YOU like. Only buy from a music store for instruments like this. I've done Ebay, but I also know a whole lot about the manufacturers, and the instruments, so I can buy on there, but as you don't make it sound like you know a lot, it is not a good idea in any way to buy on ebay. Pawn shops will have saxophones. I've been browsing them looking for an oboe recently, and any saxes they have are student level instruments. You might find a pro horn there, but the chances are very slim (probably 1 in 100 or 200 pawn shops).
