Was it a mistake for me to buy a tenor saxophone without first learning alto?
I bought a Yamaha YTS-23 because I thought it would be easier to learn a Bb instrument because I already have some trumpet experience. I started playing guitar 9 years ago, so it's not too difficult for me to think of transposing back and fourth from a C instrument to a Bb instrument. I thought figuring out Eb would be harder. I've heard some people say that ideally the alto is the better choice for learning saxophone.
It depends how big you are. Lower instruments require more wind. If you're a big guy, you'll be ok. The fact that you're a guy helps. But I don't know how old you are, or how big you are. If you are over 16 and over 165 pounds you should be OK. If not, be prepared to blow out a lot of lung power!
