Alto saxophone material/tones?
I just wanted to know what mainly affects the tone and sound when playing the alto sax other than your embachure.
Does the actual saxophone , such as whether it is a student or intermediate/pro sax affect the sound more (like a YAS-200AD vs. Yanagasiwa A901)
or does the mouthpiece affect the sound more
(regular plastic yamaha mouthpiece that comes with the sax vs. ebonite mouthpiece)
or does the ligature affect it a lot (regular ligature that comes with the sax vs. rovner dark ligature)
Thanks
Ur embouchure is the primary variable determining tone for any wind instrument. I've been playin alto for the last 6 years, as well as trumpet for 3 years. Its hard to explain, but when i started playin jazz i decided to drop my jaw more and tighten my embouchure which resulted in a warmer and fuller tone. By doing so, it changes my airstream and the vibration of the reed.
Other factors like reed size and mouthpiece material and length are additional, but lesser variables. If your playing on a Rico, QUIT!! They are for beginners and produce a rash and reedy tone, which is horrible. As soon as possible cross over to Van Doren reeds (i use ZZ's or JAVA's, but mostly ZZ's), they are a lil bit more but quality comes with a price. Reeds, as you already know is what vibrates producing sound, therefore the quality of reed does have an effect on sound.
Ligature placement not so much, but it does; u gotta find that "sweet spot" placement of the ligature, reed, and mouthpiece, where it is comfortable and the ligature doesnt restrict vibration, and you'll be find for now (when you get better and buy newer and better mouthpieces there are some options for alt ligatures which I believe are a waste cause the new mouthpieces already come with one). And the other reason people buy different ligatures is cause some are easier to put together. I've only used the ones with the single screw and it has a black rubber belt that holds everything together. But special ligatures like one i've seen from van doren has little attachment which affect vibration and therefore sound enabling it to "allow you the potential to play any style under the sun", but i've never played with one, nor do I care to.
The mouthpiece effect the tone. Metal ones are often used for jazz, because they produce a more gritty and brighter tone, ebonite, which is what I have, is between a hard rubber and metal mouthpiece, and hard rubber is usually has a smoother warmer tone. But it all varies 4rm player to player.
Different saxs like ur traditional stater sax, the yamaha will never sound as good as the Yani. They are made to cater the players needs. When you start playing you suck, there's no reason for you to have a instrument that projects the way, feels, or the overall better playablity and feel a Yani has. And that too varies 4rm player to player. Cheaper saxs usually mean cheaper material and less attention to detail.
But mostly its all about ur embouchure; you can have the best sax, and all the reeds and ligatures and mouthpieces in the world and sound like shit. You gotta listen to other sax player, who are hella better than you and try to imitate it, and one random day you'll have a breakthrough and your tone will change. Hoped it helped
, and learn ur scales modes! (modes are scales starting on different degrees of your major scale you'll need it for improv later on)
