Alto Sax Always Flat Help?
i recently bought a used but in excellent condition Yamaha Yas-23 Alto Saxophone and have an Al 3 optimum Vandoren Mouth piece. For some reason this sax is always flat. Now i have tried many things from putting my mouthpiece in very deep so you can barly see the cork and it has helped but its still a bit flat. As a test i pinched by 2.5 vandoren reed as a way to make the note extremely sharp but that wasn't the case. it didnt say that sharp. So i don't believe its my sax mouthpiece, mouthpiece placement, or embouchure. any suggestions. Maybe about reeds. Would a 3 help?
this is an Eb saxophone. and the reed has been used for at least a month but has no breaks to it.
if you got that thing pushed in as far as you can, then I would get it looked at. The reed sizes shouldn't have anything to do with your intonation if you are playing properly. The only the reed size will do is create more resistance. Higher the reed # the more resilient the reed, the more rounded off the tone will be, but nothing to do with intonation.
If you bought it used, it could have a venting issue of some kind (a tiny bit of air could be leaking somewhere, so little that you wouldn't notice, but it could easily effect the intonation of the horn). If I were you, just take it in.
Good luck!
