Alto Saxophone help? I just got into a more advanced band....?
Okay, so I'm looking for people who know A LOT about Saxophones.
I'm playing on a Yamaha (YAS-23), And I think I can get a DECENT tone of off it. I recently moved up to my school's most advanced band, and I now have to play on size 4 reeds. I was playing on a size 3! Anyway, I get this really breathy sound when I play. I have a cheap basic ligature, and I play on a C* mouthpiece.
How can I improve that breathy sound? What reeds should I play on? What does "flat chin" mean? How do I keep the corners of my mouth closed? What are some overall tips?
Oh, and if it matters, my band is a "Level 2". Or at least that's what my teacher says, LOL.
I play clarinet, but the embouchure for both instruments is very similar, and I have a best friend who plays alto sax, so I'm fairly familiar with both instruments. Last year I moved up to my school's highest band and it can be overwhelming, but as long as you put in the effort, it'll be a rewarding experience.
As far as the actual embouchure goes, my director told me to think of Kenny from South Park. When you have a hoodie over your head and you pull the strings tight, it makes a small tight circle in the center of your face. Try and do the same thing with your mouth. Create a tight center for the air to push through, and that will help your sound.
"Flat chin" is simply not allowing your lower jaw to move forward when you play. This also gives you a better tone and bigger sound.
When going up in reed strength, it is best to do so gradually, so buy 3.5's and work on those for a while until you master a consistently good tone on them and then move up to 4's.
As far as the actual mouth piece goes, I've played on $50 ones and $400 dollar ones and found that the cheaper one gives me better results, it's all a matter of preference.
Improving your tone takes a little practice each day. Pick a two octave scale that fits the range of your instrument and play long tones on each note. For intonation practice, get a tuner and see how loud/quiet you can play and still be in tune. Good Luck.
