How do you adjust to a new saxophone mouthpiece?
I play Bari sax, and Ive played on a yamaha 5 mouthpiece (85 opening) for several years. I finally went to a guy in my area who is a mouthpiece expert, and he set me up with a old meyer mothpiece (120 opening). It's a big jump, and I have a gig in 1 week, and I'm squeaking on some high notes, and may or may not be in tune ( it's spring break so I haven't had rehearsal yet).
What are some things I could practice to get used to my mouthpiece?
1.) In most cases the mouthpiece is not the problem, but if it is, you can send it off to a mouthpiece re-finisher and it will come back perfect. This usually costs about $75 and takes a couple weeks. If you have a gig this week, this is probably not what you ant to do. Instead just make sure the inside is really clean.
2.) There could also be a reed problem. If your experiencing squeaking, the reed is most likely too soft. If this is the case its a simple fix, all you have to do is slide your reed further back on the mouthpiece to make the opening bigger. This will make the reed seem tougher, just don't pull it back too much or you will get an airy sound.
3.) If for some extremely rare reason the reed is too tough, you can buy a reed finishing set. This set is basically a sand paper black with instructions on how to easily and evenly adjust your reed. You can also just clip the tip. But the reed is probably not too tough. If anything else, the reed has a flaw in which case you should either throw it out, or adjust it using the reed finishing set described above.
4.) The problems source lastly could be an embouchure issue. if there is squeaking that normally comes from biting too hard. when playing just think more "o" like your blowing out candle. If the squeaking is coming whenever you play altissimo, then you have to open your throat more.
hope that helps- matt
